The Diaspora Reconnection Program participated in a Renaming Ceremony for each of its participants. This included being submerged into the ancient african culture.
First the Elders, Chiefs and QueenMother Nana Tseasaa III Queen of Gwira Akyinim- Elmina poured libations to the ancestors requesting permission to proceed and asking permission to give to the DRP members genuine Akan names based on their day of birth and their character.
Secondly, they submitted prayers and guidance.
Thirdly, one by one each member was called before the elder and he asked us to take a libation of white liquor to know that it taste bitter, knowing that the truth is also bitter. Then we drank water to know the difference. Then libation was poured out in 3's on our behalf.
Next a wreath made of local herbs was prayed over and place about our neck, signfying protection. Also another wreath for our wrist was place upon our right hand, also for protection.
After these cultural and heritage rituals, we were given our new names and welcomed into the Royal Aboradze Family of Gwira Akyinim- Elmina. Followed by the breaking of bread, eating together as one family.
